Beaudesert band Silo is looking to build on recent Scenic Rim Battle of the Bands success as the young musicians prepare to record and release original music.
The five-piece band – Daniel Alcorn, Oliver Bennett, Darcy Crystal, Jackson Rideout and Oscar Martens – has been performing together for about two years after meeting through GTM Music Studios.
Bass player Daniel Alcorn said the group adopted the name Silo after a suggestion from lead guitarist Rideout.
“I wasn’t even there and the group chat name just changed one day and it was Silo,” he said.
The group describes its sound as a mix of grunge and rock and has built experience through local performances, jam nights and community events.
Battle of the Bands was one of Silo’s biggest opportunities to date, performing a set featuring songs by Silverchair, Franz Ferdinand and The Screaming Jets.
Alcorn said the group went into the June 14 event well-prepared after extensive rehearsals.
“We performed the greatest we’ve ever performed,” he said.
“I was worried because one of the bands previously had played the same song as us – so we just had to play it better.”
The band was particularly pleased with its stage presence, which included two of the band members standing on tables during the show.
“I think that’s what tipped the judges into our favour was our stage presence,” Alcorn said.
The victory earned Silo prize money, which the musicians plan to reinvest into the band.
Alongside performing covers, the group has been working on original material, collaborating on their first song.
The track began with a guitar riff by Rideout before the rest of the band added their own parts and Alcorn wrote the lyrics.
Silo is now looking to record and release the song in coming months.
They have also been nominated for the Create Make Release program, an initiative by the Gold Coast Music Network that mentors emerging artists record, release and market original music.
