BEAUDESERT Country Women’s Association memberships have nearly doubled compared with last year as newcomers gravitate toward the fun, helpful group.

As the local CWA buzzes with fresh energy, newcomers have an extra incentive to join in the month of April via a statewide membership drive offering 15 months for the price of 12.

At a state level, the Queensland CWA is promoting the opportunity for members to help the community, make friends, share knowledge and skills, learn new skills, access member-only discounts on QCWA accommodation and be part of a legacy.

When the Beaudesert Bulletin popped into a local CWA meeting, the group’s temporary hall at 94 Brisbane Street was buzzing with animated conversation and laughter.

The group has 29 members at the moment and last year only had 16.

In 2023, Beaudesert QCWA achieved a total of 10,000 volunteer hours with members sewing, crocheting and knitting items to donate to the community.

The group supports Beaucare, Beaudesert State School, Tracey’s Pantry, Defenders of Hope, Now Church, Wildlife Australia, Penguin Foundation, Mater Hospital, Beaudesert Hospital, Wongaburra, Whiddon and Jimboomba nursing homes and the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

They send International Birthing Kits to Papua New Guinea and Christmas goodie boxes to Australian military serving overseas, provide teddies, worry worms and busy bees for children who visit doctors’ surgeries, dentists, pathologists and libraries and donate comforting teddies for children requiring the police, ambulance and hospital.

President Linda Lynch said members joined to make a difference and make friends.

“We had a little get together, just a very social morning where Bev got up and explained what we’re on about and we got about six from that alone,” she said.

“There’s a lot of new people coming into the district now, looking to get to know people.”

She said they welcomed women of all ages and walks of life.

“Everyone’s got such a young mind here that the young ones fit in perfectly,” she said.
