Nightmare on Tina Street

A SMALL group of Tina Street residents are living in constant fear.

In 2023, Scenic Rim Regional Council approved a development application by Sherlock Construction Homes Pty Ltd for 79 townhouses on a 23,230m2 block at 17 Jane Street.

Jeremy Smith, Phil Ardrey and John and Debby Reid say there were drainage issues before construction began, but it is significantly worse now.

Jeremy, who lost his Tina Street home in 2017 due to stormwater inundation, said with the development well under way, he is now concerned that his new home is under threat.

On Monday September 30, Jeremy’s front yard flooded after a heavy shower of rain, with his neighbours’ homes also affected.

He sent video footage to Council showing the flow of water, which swept heavy hay bales down the street.

“If a little kid walked out there, they would have been swept off their feet – it was like rapids,” Jeremy said.

Less than ten days later, another heavy storm saw water pooling in Shelly Currie’s front yard only two doors down.

The residents say not only has water runoff changed, but the pipes being installed are insufficient.

“The water in my yard is water that I don’t normally get,” Shelley stated.

Shelly has lived at her Tina Street home for 30 years and has never seen water pool in front of her house, until October 9.

“If we’re having these kind of storms now and this kind of runoff, what are we going to cop in December or January?”

As part of the development, new driveways for the adjacent dwellings, kerb and channelling and underground stormwater infrastructure with a pipe diameter of 525mm will be installed.

Dean Myburgh from Sherlock Homes Developments said the company is aware of the concerns about drainage and stormwater runoff.

“While we are confident that our stormwater management plans will address such issues once fully implemented, we will investigate the current situation and take any necessary interim measures during the construction phase,” he said.

Asked what action Council will take to address the drainage problems, the spokesperson said works have been designed in accordance with the relevant standards.
