Canungra local, Steve Moriarty, has announced his intention to stand for election in Division 3 of the Scenic Rim Regional Council, at the local government elections to be held in March next year.
Steve was born and raised in Canungra and has been a teacher in the area for the past 20 years, at Beaudesert State High School, Canungra State School and for the last five years at McAuley College, Beaudesert.
He also runs the popular Sarabah Camping business, along with a few cattle and horses, on the family property at Sarabah, continuing a family tradition in agritourism by welcoming visitors to the district.
Steve has long been an active volunteer in the community and is currently the President of the Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre (for the second time), coordinator of the Moriarty Park Sportsperson of the year awards, a member of the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade, a long time volunteer and current Beef Cattle steward at the Canungra Show, and the Chairman of the Scenic Rim Uniting Church Council.
Steve, who stood for election in 2016 only to be defeated by the narrowest of margins by the current Councillor Virginia West, said he felt the time was right for a change in Division 3.
“Our region is facing unprecedented growth and development and it is time for a new direction and new ways of working,” he said.
“I will stand for greater efficiency and less waste in Council, upgrades to local roads and bridges to improve safety and cater for traffic growth, more investment in sport and recreation facilities, especially for our youth, and more transparency in decision making.”
“My commitment to the people of Division 3, and indeed all communities of the Scenic Rim, is to be part of a united Council that puts the needs of residents and ratepayers at the forefront of every decision.”
