Tamborine Mountain indie rock band Blind Corners is preparing to release its long-awaited debut album, Sink or Swim, and embarking on an east coast tour that will culminate with a hometown launch show later this month.
The album follows the release of singles Down River, Alice and Doctor ahead of the full album release on August 25.
Lead singer Toby Angus said releasing a full-length album had always been the band’s goal.
“We knew we always wanted to do an album and have a big piece or portfolio of work that people can listen to in one go,” he said.
“It’s definitely one that people should listen to in order. There’s lots of hills and valleys and it’s quite an unorthodox sort of album.”
Recorded partly on Tamborine Mountain before being completed at The Grove Studios in Gosford with producer George Carpenter, the album marks a new chapter for the group.
“We had a really fun time creating it on the mountain and then down at Grove Studios. It was a really awesome experience,” Mr Angus said.
Rather than drawing solely from personal experiences, Mr Angus said the album explored a range of character-driven stories centred on themes including failure, loss, relationships, war and hope.
“Most of the stories aren’t all personal. They’re stories of characters who have failed or haven’t seen success in their lives,” he said.
“The final track is called My Best Friend Is Sailing With Me and I think that’s the swim. That’s the hopeful finish.”
Mr Angus said the band deliberately wrote fresh material for the record, creating what he described as a more mature sound than previous releases.
“There’s definitely quite a range with some really rocky tracks, then some softer ballads and piano songs. It’s got everything on it really,” he said.
Blind Corners will tour Sydney on August 13 and Melbourne on August 15 before returning home for an album launch at Cauldron Distillery on Tamborine Mountain on August 29, supported by mountain friends The Inadequates and Adelaide act Ethanol Blend.
“The home show is always what we look forward to the most,” Mr Angus said.
“It’s a pretty special community up here.”
The album will be available on streaming platforms, with vinyl editions available online through Suitcase Records and at the band’s live shows.
