The Scenic Rim welcomed 43 new citizens to the community on June 2 while celebrating Queensland’s 165th birthday with a free family fun day from 10am to 1pm at Jubilee Park.

Queensland Day is an annual celebration of our state’s culture and heritage and is an opportunity for people to reflect on what makes them proud to be a Queenslander.

The fun of the fair included an animal farm, reptile display, face painting, jumping castles, sausage sizzle, displays by sporting and community groups as well as live music.

Mayor Tom Sharp conducted the citizenship ceremony on the day and encouraged community members from across the region to celebrate Queensland’s birthday bash.

“This Queensland Day marks 165 years since Queensland became an independent colony separate from New South Wales and this year is even more special as Beaudesert celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2024,” Mayor Sharp said.

“Queensland’s story began on June 6, 1859 and at our Queensland Day celebrations, 43 members of the Scenic Rim community write the next chapter in their story as they formally become Australian citizens.”

“Council is grateful for the Queensland Government’s support in staging this event which brings our community together,” he added.

New Beaudesert residents Sandra Spragg and her daughter Elizabeth Tereroa were two of the many people who officially became Australian citizens.

Their family was filled with joy as they watched and supported the mother and daughter from the sidelines.

“It’s a bit overwhelming but welcoming as it has been a long journey,” Elizabeth said.

“However, we feel proud to become Aussie citizens.”

Each citizen recited the pledge of commitment, accepted their citizenship certificate as well as a gift bag which included a native tree.
