THE Memorial Gardens in Jubilee Park will be the location for Beaudesert’s 2024 Remembrance Day service on November 11.
The service, which is usually at the cenotaph, is being relocated under police advice due to the current lane closure on Brisbane Street as part of the Beaudesert Town Centre Revitalisation.
In a statement, the Sub Branch said it was a safety decision.
“At a meeting with Beaudesert Police Senior Sergeant Ken Murray we were advised due to the current Brisbane Street lane closure, he had concerns for the safety of the assembled people including the community and veterans who will be attending the service in front of the cenotaph, with traffic congestion at times, we feel it will not be safe for all concerned on the day,” they said.
“The Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch welcome everyone to attend the service and honour our veterans. Service commences at 10.40am, followed by the laying of wreaths. The Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch Board apologise for the change of venue as we have a duty of care to our veterans and assembled persons on the day.”
Sub Branch Senior Vice President John Leatherbarrow, who will lead the service, said other than the change of venue Remembrance Day would remain the same.
“It was once called Armistice Day and was changed after World War II by Federal Government legislation to call it Remembrance Day, so we remember all those who served in all wars and all conflicts, not just World War I,” he said.
“Beaudesert’s Memorial Gardens were built with the help of the Sub Branch and the Council as a memorial to all who served and paid the ultimate price so it’s still a highly relevant location.
“Remembrance Day is where we pay respect to those who have previously served or are still serving in the armed forces to keep this country safe. We live in peace in this country because of their sacrifices, and we owe them a great debt of gratitude.”
The Memorial Gardens are between the Beaudesert pool and library on Brisbane Street.
The service will start at 10.40am on November 11, with one minute’s silence at 11am.
