If the power suddenly goes out, what do you do, how do you cook the evening meal?

The answers were revealed at the recent ‘Dinner In The Dark’ series held by the SRRC Disaster Management Team at various locations across the region.

Against a backdrop of live music, cooking demos were made on gas camping stoves by entertaining cooks Mel and Kat with a free dinner of potatoes, corn fritters, and beans provided to attendees – all in the dark!

Cuppa In The Communi-Tea was also recently held at the Tamborine Memorial Hall presenting a range of supportive services and free giveaways for local residents, as well as a delicious morning tea catered by the Tamborine Village Lions.

Informative details about the Fire Ant Eradication Program were also presented. It was great to connect and chat with community over a ‘cuppa’!

As part of my portfolio as Councillor for Community, Arts and Culture, I attended the Scenic Rim Heritage Network quarterly meeting, held this time at the Harrisville & District Historical Museum.

The museums and historical societies play an extremely important role in the preservation of our region’s history and heritage. As the volunteers for these groups can also be somewhat aging, support now for these groups is of the utmost importance – to keep our record of the past safe. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to play a significant part in their ongoing support.

In my portfolio capacity, I am also pleased to report that the iconic City Deal project for Davidson Park is still on track to go ahead.

As a permanent public art and nature play space, the project will support a sense of community and social cohesion offering families and visitors free entry to an enhanced cultural experience that is unique to our region’s identity, while providing opportunities and support for our local artists, local businesses, cultural tourism and heritage, as well as creation of various jobs.

An outstanding enhancement to our built environment and something of which to be quite proud for our region!

Domestic and Family Violence is unfortunately a constant ongoing scourge across Australia. By the very overarching stats of one in four women and one in 14 men currently experiencing some kind of DFV, everyone surely knows someone who has been affected.

Sadly, a woman is also murdered every four days in this country.

The DFV Prevention Breakfast, supported by YFS, Zonta, Rotary, YAAC, etc, and proudly the SRRC as network champions, was recently held in support of awareness and the work being done in prevention of this heinous abuse.

As always, community is where connections are made!
