Money Troubles

We have a problem. The cost of living pressures are being felt by many and it is starting to show. But there is a hidden and destructive issue that shocked me. While places like Las Vegas and Macau are synonymous with gambling, Australians are the world leaders.

Per capita, Australians have the highest rate of losses to gambling, nearly $200 per person ahead of Hong Kong in second place and over $500 more than the United States.

This is not something to be proud of. I remember listening to the late Wayne Goss years ago as he reflected on his political career, particularly as Qld Premier. A significant regret he had was introducing poker machines to Queensland, admitting they are a ‘scourge’.

While pokies took in $3.2b last year from Queensland punters, this is just the tip of the problem. Betting apps mean we can bet anywhere, anytime on almost anything!

The Apostle Paul advises Timothy, ‘But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction’ (1 Tim 6:9).

Let us consider the ramifications of gambling, on our families, on society and on us. If we lack wisdom, may we humble ourselves and ask God for His wisdom, ‘who gives generously to all without reproach and it will be given Him’ (James 1:5).
