As a part of the Year Ten Design curriculum, Design Teacher Zac Cunningham tasked his students with designing a print advertisement suitable for a newspaper for local business Scenic Rim Sports.

“When I shared my idea with some lovely small businesses, they were more than happy to give up their time and expertise to give the students a real-world scenario,” says Zac.

“It was also great to put a spotlight light on the amazing work graphic designers do every day.”

Scenic Rim Sports owner Leanne Boyle embraced the idea when she was approached by Beaudesert Bulletin Editor, Keer Moriarty and Zac.

“Keer and Zac mentioned it to me, and I thought it was a great idea, I never got to do anything like that at school,” she said.

This opportunity allowed students to apply the theory that they had learned in class.

They used Canva to design ads for events such as an end of financial year sale, State of Origin, change of seasons and the Olympics.

Year Ten Design student, Jasmine Livingston said it was a good opportunity to practise her skills and see what it would be like to be a graphic designer.

“It’s not every day that students get to see their work in print,” says Zac.

Scenic Rim Sports were very happy with the shortlisted designs that they saw and may even use some of the students’ ideas in the future.

“We are always happy to help inspire student’s imaginations,” Leanne said.
