The smoke haze that we’ve seen across the region in recent weeks has been a timely reminder for everyone across the Scenic Rim to be prepared for bushfire as well as other natural disasters.
Whether it’s the wet season, storm season or bushfire season, all Scenic Rim residents need to have a ‘what if’ plan in place to ensure their own safety and the safety of family and friends.
If you have not already done so, please sign up for the Scenic Rim Disaster Dashboard at disasterdashboard.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/
This is a great resource providing a single source of information including bushfire alerts, weather warnings and updates on road conditions and power outages.
It also has valuable information on disaster preparation and recovery and, by opting in to receive alerts, you will also receive important updates via email.
In recent years we have seen an influx of new residents from urban areas who may not understand the risks of flood and fire in our region so please get to know your neighbours and share your local knowledge.
As we have frequently seen, community connection is invaluable before, during and after a disaster.
In coming weeks, please take time to review your ‘what if’ plans and prepare for storm season and bushfire by cleaning up around your property and removing debris.
While owners of larger properties should clear fire breaks and make every effort to reduce fuel loads, it’s important to work with your local rural fire captain and obtain the necessary permits before undertaking any controlled burns that may spark a bushfire.
As part of Get Ready Queensland Week 2024, Council is hosting a free Family Fun Day on Saturday 12 October from 10am to 2pm at Jubilee Park Beaudesert.
There will be all the fun of the fair with a petting zoo, jumping castles, inflatables, facepainting and food trucks offering something for everyone.
Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to pick up valuable information from first responders about how to get ready before a disaster and what happens afterwards.
I look forward to seeing you there.
