A proposed waste-to-energy incinerator at Bromelton has formally entered the assessment phase, with Cleanaway submitting its application to the Office of the Coordinator-General on March 6.
The proposal is now subject to assessment under the Bromelton State Development Area framework, including a future public consultation period.
Jon Krause said the independent Coordinator-General would oversee the process.
“Cleanaway has recently lodged its application with the independent Coordinator-General, who is the decision maker for developments at Bromelton,” Mr Krause said.
“The application will now progress through a comprehensive assessment process, including considering traffic and environmental considerations, under the Bromelton Development Scheme and Queensland’s stringent environmental laws.”
Lizz Hills from Keep the Scenic Rim Scenic said many residents felt the Scenic Rim was being asked to shoulder the burden of South East Queensland’s waste.
“What I think the Scenic Rim is being asked to carry is a city problem that it didn’t create,” Ms Hills said.
“The waste is going to come from urban South East Queensland and 12 per cent of it is coming from the Scenic Rim. Our roads can’t handle that.”
Ms Hills said concerns surrounding the proposal continued to grow as more residents became aware of the development and its potential impacts.
“I think it’s more around helping people understand the issue. It’s really complex,” she said.
“I often use a metaphor of babushka dolls. You’ve got health, you’ve got roads, you’ve got our local economy and you’ve got our national economy.”
She said many community members were also seeking stronger public positions from elected representatives as the proposal moved through the assessment process.
“I would like to see our local members stand up and say exactly where they are at publicly with this,” Ms Hills said.
Mr Krause said he had been listening to community views regarding the proposal since 2023, prior to the application being formally lodged.
Ms Hills said members of Keep the Scenic Rim Scenic were expected to meet with Mr Krause later this month to discuss concerns surrounding the proposal.
“Jon has done a lot for our region and I’m sure that once he’s across the whole subject that he will be against having this in our local area,” she said.
The proposed facility would be located within the Bromelton State Development Area near existing industrial operations including quarries, logistics businesses and waste facilities.
