AN IMPRESSIVE group of young people have brighter futures ahead following their graduation from Harvest Point Church’s traineeship program.
The men and women of all ages graduated with a Certificate 1 in Construction, as well as White Card, First Aid and CPR certificates.
Their course began in October 2023 and the group overcame many obstacles throughout the course.
Course Coordinator, Steve Flaws said they began improving the gardens at Harvest Point, but when at project was complete they looked for another opportunity in the community.
They were able to rejuvenate the bar at Mununjali House, a project which the group were involved in from the design through to completion.
The final design includes mosaics of the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander flags at the front of the bar.
Steve said the group pulled together throughout the project to get it completed, overcoming challenges along the way.
“What I’ve seen is really, really impressive,” he said.
“We have one graduate going on to an apprenticeship and all graduates except one have a job to go to now they have finished the course.”
“That is a great result.”
Former hospitality worker, Shakira Salter, said when she first came into the program she wasn’t sure about doing construction.
“I wanted to give something new a go,” she said.
“It taught me a lot of things. I did have my ups and downs but the team is amazing and now I have something to be proud of.”
As a Beaudesert local it meant a lot to Shakira to give the bar at Mununjali House new life.
“I can come here and think – I did this.”
“We got to use sledgehammers and smashed it all, apart from the foundation, and rebuilt it all.”
Shakira is looking forward to starting her job in demolition.
