FOR more than half a century, Kerry’s David Willis has been enthralled with the beauty of chooks.
First introduced to breeding and showing poultry as a youngster, it has been a passion that has brought him great pride and joy.
“I get a lot of enjoyment out of breeding fowl to the correct standard and exhibiting,” David said.
“The people that I have met through the poultry world are a great bunch.”
David has shown poultry at numerous shows over the years and has won many awards including Brisbane Show’s Champion Soft Feather Bird last year.
Now he is preparing his best for the annual Beaudesert Poultry Club show on May 24 which will attract an estimated 400 entries.
As one of the foundation members and current vice president of the local club, David hopes that his hobby will continue to grow in future years.
He says it is not about winning ribbons and an occasional trophy that drives his passion for breeding and showing.
“I’m not a person that wants my name put up in lights,” he said.
“We’re not just in it to win it, but when you do, it’s on merit.
“Nobody is more up the ladder than anyone else; our poultry club is one that we all enjoy.”
This year’s Beaudesert Poultry Show will feature a section for Mediterranean birds for the first time and that’s good news for David as his main breeds are large soft feather Minorca and Ancona chooks.
Chooks are judged on their physical appearance, handling quality, and health under a vast range of categories including heavy and light large soft feather, bantam soft feather and bantam hard feather.
Judges John Kendall and John Gibson will adjudicate on the day, handing out various cash and bird feed prizes.
