Creativity and craftivism combined for an event with purpose at the inaugural Scenic Rim Sustainable Fashion Designer Showcase on April 18.
The Fashion Revolution Week event in Beaudesert, organised by the Boonah Organisation for a Sustainable Shire (BOSS), highlighted the talents of local designers and a strong local conservation push, including the ‘No Incinerator for Scenic Rim’ movement.
About 100 outfits were showcased on the stage across the course of the day from established and emerging designers.
Carmelle Gricks of Studio Shabuk’d, who was one of several local designers to show a collection, shared an empowering message.
“We can turn anything into something beautiful. There’s beauty and adventure in everything.” she said.
“Reuse what we have rather than buying new.”
Cassandra Pons, the local designer behind Lazy Girl Lingerie, shared her story of global success and her dramatic creations featured in the finale of the showcase.
The event also celebrated the ingenuity of locals who entered the Upcycle Op Shop Challenge, in which Amelie Hunter won Most Creative Outfit with her design ‘Save the Turtles’ and Cat Pitt and Therese Flynn-Clarke received Highly Commended.
In the Healthy and Active Scenic Rim category, Natasha Hain won first and Jess Bailey won second place.
In the Farm Gate Trails and Picnics category Michelle Hall won first and WAGS won second.
In the High Teas and Long Lunches category, Jess Bailey won first and Polly Cameron won second.
In the Scenic Rim Student Creatives category, Amelie Hunter won first place.
In the Showball Glitz and Glamour category, Amanda Pearce won first place and JJ Nortje won second.
