LAUGHTER and words of support fill Beaudesert Boxing Club each time the new women’s boxing classes are on.

Of course, the women are also there to punch, and trainer Unique Wharerau is only too happy to teach them how.

Unique has welcomed many local women from different ages and stages of life to her classes since she started putting them on at Beaudesert Boxing Club recently.

The classes have been particularly popular with mums.

“I’m a mum myself so I think I get a lot of mums going, ‘she’s doing it, why can’t I do it?’” Unique said.

“I think it’s good motivation for them because obviously it’s hard training and being a mum, getting that alone time to do it.”

She said boxing provided a good break from the challenges of life.

“I think it’s just good for your mental health to be honest,” she said.

“It’s that outlet because being a mum can be very overwhelming, I get a few teen girls who do it and school might be overwhelming, a few older loves coming in and it might be an outlet from their lives.

“Everyone’s got something going on you don’t know about and that’s why they come here.

“They don’t bring their outside life here they just come, get it done and feel good afterwards. That’s what’s the most important part, not getting too caught up on the physical or competitive side of it, just literally coming to get a break.”

She said there was something in it for everyone.

“You think boxing is a pretty competitive sport but not here. Everyone gets along really well and feels good afterwards. A lot of the girls will cheer the other girls on and it’s a supportive, fun environment,” she said.

“A lot of women like the technical learning side of things as well, and you could do this class and potentially fight if that’s what you wanted to do,” she said.

“I’ve got boxing experience myself; I’ve had a few fights and hoping to fight again this year as well. So, I’m training myself and training them as well, we’re all working together.”

Women’s boxing classes go for 45 minutes on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6.30pm and Friday 9am at Beaudesert Boxing Club and are for women aged 16 and older.
