Beaudesert resident Andrew Gough and his good friend Chris Fletcher are forming the Lost Bearings Team to join this year’s Mystery Box Rally held on August 16.

Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for Cancer Council in Australia.

The event will consist of teams of two driving a car that is 25 years or older on a five day mystery route along Australia’s backroads.

Andrew is doing this rally in memory of family friend, Brendan McGrath, who sadly passed away while battling cancer.

“What sparked it off was Brendan – their family had done the rally,” Andrew said.

“The car has already done a rally, so the car has actually stayed in the family.”

The Lost Bearings will be driving a 1999 VT Commodore sedan.  The signage is currently being redesigned based on the original ‘Betoota Rescue’ design.

“I might change its name because it was originally called the Betoota Rescue, which is a town somewhere – I thought if I should change it to the Beaudesert Rescue,” Andrew said.

Andrew plans to incorporate a few extensions to the vehicle such as a honk‘o’meter for community interaction, and Starlink Internet that provides a special gift for donators.

“I made a gadget called a honk‘o’meter – the idea behind it is, when someone honks their horn, it counts the number. However many people honk, I was going to transfer that to dollars,” he said.

“On the website, people who donate will get a password. People can watch where the car’s going on the rally so you can see it – you go around the site and we’ll put photos in.”

The Lost Bearings first challenge is to raise a minimum of $4,000 to participate in this year’s event and they are hoping that local support will help push them achieve this goal.

“I don’t really go in the way people do with advertising, I’d rather if people want to help the cause,” Andrew said.

“It’s always difficult when times are tough to ask for money – if people want to (donate), then they can.”
