Local horse pipped at the post in Cup

Kaiberry (3) moves up to take Collay’s Spirit (1) in the Beaudesert Cup.

Gold Coast trained Kaiberry proved too good for local horse Collay’s Spirit in the Beaudesert Cup on 8 July.

The seven year old gelding, ridden by Craig Robertson and trained by Bevan Laming, managed to push ahead and pip Collay’s Spirit at the post, winning the $35,000 race by only 0.1 of a length.

The favourite in the Beaudesert Cup had previously run third in the 2000 metres Gatton Cup two weeks before.

Collay’s Spirit, trained at nearby Fenwick Farm by Ryan Tyrell and Tom Button, was unlucky to be beaten.

The four year old gelding, ridden by Jai Williams, had a huge run; leading throughout the race.

Third place was only 0.6 of a length away, with Cosmic Gossip, trained by Lindsay Hatch and ridden by Micheal Hellyer.

Williams had won the previous race on Jay Bellamy trained Bowrider, finishing with an impressive two length win to Kelly Schweida’s favourite, He’s The News.

Hat Trick

The Beaudesert Cup win completed a hat trick for jockey Craig Robertson, known as Robbo, on the day.

He took out the Class 3 Handicap in Race 3 on Richard Laming trained Xtra Gear and backed up to win the QTIS Maiden Race 4 on three year old gelding Ivanov, trained by Adam and Dallas Simpson.

The 1650 metre race attracted a quality field of eight runners.
