Reaching for the stars may be possible for Typhoon le Garde, as the high achiever has recently been offered to sail the seas on the Young Endeavour in January.
As an excited young sailor, Typhoon was ecstatic to have been chosen by the youth development program run by Young Endeavour.
“It’s very exciting because I know not many people get to do it,” he said.
“I’ve done a bit of sailing before. I went to sailing schools a couple of times and I’ve enjoyed them.”
However, this opportunity of a lifetime, as with all things, comes at a cost.
With the support of the Beaudesert community, Typhoon has been fundraising to reach his goal of $5,050 and he is almost halfway.
He has been auspiced by Beaudesert Rotary and has received an immense amount of support from Marijke Freeman at Beaudesert Caravan and Tourist Park who organised a trivia night in support of Typhoon.
“I was in a trivia team with a group of people from the caravan park and we were versing all other teams. That went really well,” Typhoon said.
Typhoon’s mother Trysett has been a main component of his fundraisers as she also organised a progressive fundraiser using box lids.
“If I come across an opportunity for Typhoon, I say yes, and then I work out the details later. That’s how I have to do it, otherwise we’d never do anything.,” she said.
“If you don’t get that much, then you don’t get as much – we have to have something to aim for.”
Typhoon has had various donations from locals and people in various places as far as Gold Coast, Sydney and Adelaide.
He appreciates their support, especially from local Rick Gillow, who Typhoon sees as his mentor.
“I’m always keen to encourage young kids to achieve what they can – he’s clearly a high achiever,” Rick said.
“I think the Young Endeavour is a great opportunity for anyone to experience outside of their comfort zone, learn different things, meet different people.”
“All of these things that give kids self-confidence I think is the way to go,” he added.
Typhoon will continue to fundraise for his trip. To donate or find out more, contact Trysett at 0412 497 202.
