Motivation and communication have driven the Beaudesert Kingfishers Open Women’s team from an early-season setback to back-to-back wins.
After starting their season with a 14-42 loss to the Ipswich Swifts, the Kingfishers bounced back in style, defeating the Fassifern Bombers 16-4 before backing it up with a 24-6 win over the Nerang Roosters in round three.
Coach Patrick Earley said the team’s growing enthusiasm and passion have been key to their turnaround.
“We had a tough loss at the start, but the girls really pulled through and are connecting a lot better than they did at the start,” he said.
“We are starting to get a lot more girls down to training and a lot more excitement, especially around the community.”
Earley’s focus as coach is to strike a balance between enjoyment and performance, with finals firmly in sight.
“My idea is to let the girls have as much fun as they can and also play some good footy because, at the end of the day, it’s all up to fun, but a win feels better than anything,” he said.
Team captain Maree Blow said she is proud of the team’s progress, having been part of the club’s inaugural women’s side in 2018.
For the first time, the Kingfishers now have five all-female teams across age groups – under 11s, 13s, 15s, 17s and open women’s.
“When you get into it, they become your second family, you make good friendships and they keep me young and fit,” she said.
“To finally have the juniors coming through, it’s exciting to see that this team will be here for years to come.”
Earley hopes to see greater support for the women’s game, particularly from young girls who could become the next generation of players.
“I just want to see more fans for the women’s games, more younger girls especially interested in footy because it’s a great sport,” he said.
“It does stick with you and gives you something to look forward to.
“We’ve got a lot of talent in this team, and I can’t wait to get through this season.”
