Tamborine Lodge Freemasons will host a charity golf day at Beaudesert Golf Club on May 31, raising funds for charity organisation, Young Diggers.
Freemasonry in Queensland dates back to the 19th century, with the United Grand Lodge of Queensland formed in the early 1920s through the amalgamation of English, Scottish and Irish constitutions.
The organisation has long balanced the preservation of tradition with a strong focus on charitable work, a commitment that continues today through its philanthropic arm, Hand Heart Pocket.
Event organiser Michael Fraser said the fundraiser was a natural extension of that tradition.
“Masonry is very serious about charitable works. It has been all the time I’ve been in it, and this is just an extension of that,” he said.
Michael said the event also held personal significance, combining his interest in community initiatives with a long-standing connection to golf.
The chosen charity, Young Diggers, was introduced to the lodge by its current Master, Aaron Hassell, a retired soldier who remains active in the Army Reserve.
“It’s fair to say the rest of us didn’t know too much about it before he introduced us to it,” Fraser said.
“We’ve already done a couple of small things for them and we think it’s something worth pursuing.”
The day will centre on an Ambrose-style golf competition, alongside fundraising activities including raffles, novelty competitions and a possible auction.
“It’ll all be about raising money,” Michael said.
“We’ll have things like long drives, putting and chipping competitions, and raffles. We may run an auction if we get donated items.”
Funds raised on the day will be boosted through Hand Heart Pocket’s matched giving initiative.
“For every dollar we make, they will match it,” Michael said.
“If we can make five grand, we’ll be giving 10 grand to Young Diggers.”
Michael said early interest had been encouraging, though numbers were still building ahead of the event.
“It’s a first-time event, so it’ll be interesting to see the level of support, but we’re getting a lot of positive noise,” he said.
