Beaudesert’s Yarnbombers are back this year, bringing Christmas spirit to the town and covering public spaces with cheery crocheted Christmas decorations.

Vicki McAteer said they started by decorating Jubilee Park and are moving throughout the town.

“This actually takes a long time – two days – and there is only the five of us,” she said.

Vicki wasn’t involved in the first year of yarnbombing but came on board about five years ago.

It is all about adding something positive to the town.

“This time of year can be really difficult for some people,” said Vicki.

“We want people to have something to make them smile and bring joy.”

Most of the yarnbombing decorations are reused from year to year, but new pieces are created from year to year at crochet mornings held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at Jubilee Park.

Vicki described the group as prolific crocheters.

Anne Andrews has created decorations from some knitted pieces donated by a deceased estate.

“I don’t know how old the original piece is but it was in this lady’s house for over ten years.  It is in very good condition and I have added to it,” she said.

Everything had to be up by Thursday 30 November in time for the lighting of the Christmas Tree and also for the Christmas in the Park event on 1 December.

Vicki said the group would welcome more help from anyone wanting to either crochet more decorations or put up and pull down the decorations next year.
