Wongaburra Society Residential Aged Care Facility have teamed up with Rylec QLD to install 814 solar panels on their hostel building. The installation will create a greener future for residents and save money on electricity.
Wongaburra CEO Atul Kumar Singh said the development was part of a long term plan.
“We were thinking about it for a long time – it’s well planned, and I think it was done at an opportune time as costs aren’t going to go down,” he said.
“We have good support from the community. I think the board and the community keeps us in line and accountable to work as a team.”
The solar panels will ideally last for a minimum of 20 years and is estimated to save Wongaburra up to $120,000 per year in electricity bills.
The eight-week project was funded by community grants and public support, with Palliative Aid for Logan Services (PALS) offering a generous donation.
Dorothy Murphy and her friend Judy Wood dedicate most of their time to PALS which provides services to meet the financial gap in essential medical and living requirements for Logan seniors.
Dorothy was impressed with the atmosphere of Wongaburra and said she had no doubt where she wanted the money to go.
“We couldn’t have done it without Atul, he impressed the socks off me. You will never find care like you do at Wongaburra – I will defend it to my death because there is no place like it,” Dorothy said.
“The quality of care you get from that place is just from the heart – where else would you go?”
Atul appreciated the work done by local contractors Rylec QLD and was glad to be able to find local businesses to support the Wongaburra development.
“If there are people in the community who can do the job, we will go to them,” he said.
“Behind the scenes, it’s just enormous work – they just want to help Wongaburra survive.”
