A group of 25 Scenic Rim residents officially became Australian citizens at The Centre Beaudesert on Tuesday, June 18.
Mayor Tom Sharp welcomed the new citizens, who hail from countries including Thailand, the Philippines, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the United Kingdom, marking the final step in their journey to becoming Australians.
“For 25 members of our community, this event represents a milestone in their journey from immigrant to Australian citizen,” Cr Sharp said.
“Whatever our origins, our Australian citizenship is the common bond uniting us all.”
Among the recipients was Yuwanut Chaiboonmee, a nurse from Thailand who now lives in Gleneagle and works at Wongaburra aged care.
“I’m so happy to finally be a citizen,” she said.
“It’s been a long process, four years of studying nursing and also meeting all the citizen requirements, but today it feels worth it.”
Yuwanut chose to settle in Gleneagle because of the peaceful surroundings and scenic landscapes.
“It’s such a beautiful and quiet area and being five minutes from work is a bonus,” she said.
“I love that I get to be a part of this great little community.”
Local performer Susie Colley provided entertainment and sung the Australian National Anthem and Mununjali Elder Aunty Rosalyn Uke delivered a Welcome to Country.
Since 2018, the Scenic Rim has welcomed new citizens from more than 55 countries, and the tradition continues as more people choose the region as their new home.
