Self-centeredness is alive and thriving.
We know because we see it all around us.
Lacking empathy, taking, blaming, dominating, attention seeking – these are all signs that point to the self-centeredness of humanity.
And to be honest it is a battle that we all face. Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter when He declared to His disciples, ‘If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me’ (Matt 16:24).
While this sounds counter-intuitive, the more we move from being self-centered to other-centered, the more we discover the truth of Jesus’ words, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ (Acts 20:35).
This comes from the very heart of God revealed in word and action, ‘For God so loved the world, that He gave…His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16).
Indeed it is said that one can give without loving, but one cannot love without giving.
