Redeem the Time

I find winter frustrating. Not because it is cold, but the days are so short and it is hard to get things done! Technically, it is only the amount of day light hours that are less, but I am glad that we are past the winter solstice!

Paul in his letter to the Ephesians writes, ‘See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil’ (Eph. 5:15-16). To ‘redeem’ means to buy back, to regain possession. And that which we are to redeem is something that cannot be changed or stored. Time is a precious gift from God, and yet it is elusive.

We need to be making the most of every opportunity. Rather than waste our time on frivolous pursuits, we need to be careful how we live. Not walking as fools, but as those who are wise. It is easy to live self-centredly, leaving no positive lasting personal imprint on this world. Instead let us redeem the time by living wisely, following God’s way, that we might ‘overcome evil with good’ (Rom. 12:21).

Time cannot be saved, only spent. Let us wisely make the most of every opportunity gift to us by God!
