Old-time dancing is making a comeback in the Scenic Rim community as Tamrookum Hall has successfully trialled two Old-time Afternoon Dances during August.

Their initial calling for all Old-time Dancers kicked off on August 11 from 1.30pm until 4.30pm with 63 guests prepared to dance the afternoon away.

The Hall recently hosted their second Old-time Dance on August 31 with over 40 people ready to battle the heat on the dance floor.

Tamrookum Hall President Lani Deeran was overjoyed with the success of the Old-time dances and was pleased to share this timeless style of dancing with the community.

Both afternoon dances saw some dancers returning to the dance floor after many years absence and there were lots of happy smiling faces as the couples twirled around the dance floor to the lovely sounds of live music by Matt.

The shared afternoon tea was a pleasant interlude where many stories were exchanged.

Lani has found that afternoon dances work best with guests as it allows them to enjoy themselves without having to return home too late.

“I had a lovely couple who came the other week, and they commented, ‘Oh, we just love this Lani, because we can come down and back, and we’re not driving home in the dark.” she said.

“It’s good timing. A lot of people actually commented and said that the afternoon and the Old-time program suited them perfectly, and if we held them, they would come back.”

A great inspiration for the return of Old-time Dances flourished from the Be Healthy & Active group “Everyone Can Dance” that is supported by the Scenic Rim Regional Council.

“The Be Healthy & Active group have really built up our numbers at all our dances and have been great at supporting us,” Lani said.

The Tamrookum Hall will host the next Old-time Dance on December 1 from 1pm to 4.30pm with live music, once again, being provided by Matt.

Commencing in 2025, the committee has decided to run an Old Time Dance on the fourth Sunday afternoon of every month.
