Babies born at Beaudesert Hospital will go home blanketed in the love of local volunteers through the donation of handmade quilts.

Dozens of unique designs in every colour and pattern filled the room when members of Beaudesert Quilters got together for a recent working bee to make dozens of the special blankets.

Four sewing machines whirred away busily as 14 members spent the day crafting quilts to donate.

The group, which has 27 members, makes the quilts for Beaudesert Hospital and Logan Hospital, working on them at home and at weekly meetings at the Beaudesert Community Arts and Information Centre.

“The girls have all taken material home and made them and we did 100 for Logan Hospital and I’ve taken three lots, about 200, up to Beaudesert Hospital maternity now,” said President Robyn Vines.

“Sometimes we get people who are downsizing, and they might bring us a whole pile of fabric, and we might then go buy some flannelette to use as backing and then we’ll all go home and make them or have a day like this where we all get together and get it done.”

She said it was about helping the community.

“I hope it means a lot; last time I went up to the hospital to donate some they said some of the ladies were so thrilled they were in tears when they were given one of our blankets,” she said.

“It’s nice they appreciate them and then as the child’s growing up, they can say, ‘this was given to me by the Beaudesert Quilters’ and each quilt comes with a little card from us.”

The group also makes and donates breast cushions for people who have had a mastectomy.

Beaudesert Quilters meet every Wednesday and the first and third Saturday of the month at the Beaudesert Community Arts and Information Centre and members also utilise other skills like crocheting and knitting.

They are happy to take donations of fabric for the blankets and only work with 100 per cent cotton.
