Major infrastructure Upgrade in Short street to help reduce flooding
Works on the underground storm water network on Short Street have commenced to address the longstanding issue with flooding and deliver major drainage improvements that are vital to businesses in the Beaudesert town centre and the safety of the community during major rain events.
This is one of the largest infrastructure projects of this nature the town has seen in a long time. I am sure you will agree that our residents and local businesses have been very patient. We hope that in future, heavy rainfall will not impact us as badly and this may stop the flooding.
Parking in the main street
The town centre revitalisation will see an increase of 58 in the total number of car parks, including six bus and trailer spaces and seven parks for motorists in wheelchairs.
The Selwyn Park car park upgrade, with the addition of 33 spaces, is also scheduled to commence this month and is expected to take some 10 weeks to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Budget community consultation
Consultation will be sought on the Draft 2024-2025 Budget before it is considered and adopted by Council. This is a valuable opportunity for the community to gain a greater understanding of the financial parameters that Council must operate within to deliver a wide range of services. You can join the conversation online via Let’s Talk Scenic Rim or attend one of the in-person consultations that will take place in May, with final dates to be released shortly.
Commonwealth Bank Community Grant Program
The Commonwealth bank has launched their community grant program for up to $10,000.00.
Audit and Risk at Council
The Audit and Risk committee roles have now been finalised with meetings starting in late April. This committee has both external members and Councillors and reviews internal and external audits, risk, cyber security, business continuity, budgets and many other areas of business management. The Queensland Treasury Corporation and the State Government make sure that all Councils have rigorous controls in place and adhere to legislation at all times. It requires extensive research and analysis and as part of this committee and I take this role very seriously.
Scenic Rim Eat Local Month
Scenic Rim Eat Local Month is the highlight of Council’s annual events calendar and this year more than 120 events will be staged across the region throughout the month of June, culminating in the Winter Harvest Festival to be held for the first time in Kalbar. This is now recognised as Australia’s most authentic paddock-to-plate food and farming event.
Council is proud to deliver Eat Local Month in conjunction with our major partner Moffatt Fresh Produce, a wide range of supporting partners, as well as the Queensland Government, Tourism and Events Queensland, and our many other key stakeholders. As Beaudesert celebrates its Sesquicentenary (150 years), Tommerup’s Dairy Farm will also mark 150 years of farming while Eat Local Month’s major partner, Moffatt Fresh Produce, celebrates its centenary.
