Having recently returned from a much-anticipated family holiday in Europe, I have been inspired by the potential for Lake Wyaralong’s further development as a world-class rowing venue after visiting Lake Bled in Slovenia.

This stunning facility in the Julian Alps features a lookout, cafes, spectator seating for events and a picturesque walk around the lake and shows what could be achieved here with the appropriate investment in infrastructure by other levels of government.

There are significant economic and social benefits for our community from Lake Wyaralong having been identified as the venue to host the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games rowing and canoeing events, both in the lead up to and following the Games.

Investment in transport infrastructure is also vital for our region in the coming decade and I was pleased to see the recent announcement by the Australian Government of its commitment to supporting business cases for strategically significant projects.

As well as a freight rail line, we desperately need a passenger service to Beaudesert. The Australian and Queensland governments have indicated they will be exploring opportunities to meet passenger and freight needs in the corridor between Salisbury and Beaudesert and I hope this continues to progress.

It has been great to get out and about in the local community in recent weeks.

The Scenic Rim Seniors Expo at The Centre Beaudesert as part of Seniors Month was a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to connect with a range of government and private service providers.

Organisations such as Probus – and its aims of fun, friendship and fellowship (and we recently added FOOD) – are tremendously important in enabling retirees to connect socially and I was honoured to be a guest at the Beaudesert club’s 40th birthday celebrations recently. My congratulations to all involved.

I am looking forward to The Long Sunset music spectacular which is only weeks away. This three-day celebration of art, culture and community features acclaimed Australian musicians Matt Corby and Angie McMahon and will be held from Friday November 1 at Elysian Fields outside Canungra.
