Calling all Old-time Dancers – Tamrookum Hall is hosting a special Old-time Dance on Sunday August 11 from 1.30pm until 4.30pm to relive the memories that have taken place on the dance floor in previous years.
The afternoon will have a $10 entry fee – $5 for school children– and include live music by Matt, raffles, supplied tea and coffee, novelty dances and encourages guests to bring a plate to share.
Tamrookum Hall President Lani Deeran decided to take up the idea of hosting an Old-time Dance after her Be Healthy & Active group encouraged her to do so.
“I’m holding this dance purely because of this beautiful group. We decided to give an Old-time Dance a go,” she said.
“We have to keep using these community halls – we’re trying hard to keep our doors open.”
Old-time dancing (OTD) has faced multiple challenges in its time as the division between OTD and New Vogue dancing resulted in some dancers saying goodbye to the art entirely.
“When we go right back, dancing was the main form of entertainment – there were many dances, but they were only Old-time Dances,” Lani said.
“For my generation, that’s all we knew. I grew up with OTD – they introduced New Vogue and some people got upset.”
“It caused a division between dancers,” she added.
Although the dances tried to cater towards both forms of dancing, New Vogue eventually took the limelight and Old-time dancing was hidden behind its shadow.
“I see both sides of the coin – there are benefits to New Vogue dancing. Unfortunately, local people never really took to New Vogue,” Lani said.
“It’s such a shame because the entertainment, the exercise and the socialisation are just so good.”
Lani hopes this event will spark the interest of those who have longed to dance again and encourage them to fall back in love with Old-time dancing.
“It will be purely an Old-time dance and we are going to try and make it a family day,” she said.
“We’re trying to encourage all the Old-time dancers to come out of the woodwork – let’s relive the memories.”
