While the cooler weather means pulling out the cosy jumpers and fluffy socks, it also brings the flu season along with it. World Immunisation Week is April 24 to 30and this is a reminder for those most vulnerable to book in their annual Flu Vaccine through the Australian Government National Immunisation Program.

For those eligible through the program, vaccinations are accessible through regular immunisation providers, such as general practices, pharmacies, and immunisation clinics.

Scenic Rim Discount Drug Store is offering free vaccinations for those eligible, or $25 for those not included in the program. Vaccinations are available from a qualified pharmacist Monday-Friday 9am to 4pm, with bookings available either over the phone or through the store’s website.

According to Head of the interim Australian Centre for Disease Control, Professor Paul Kelly, the highest rate for the flu in 2023 was children under 14 years old. In Australia, 39 people died from the flu last year, with 9 of them being children under the age of 16.

Professor Pauly Kelly urges the community to get vaccinated to protect themselves from severe illness and avoid hospitalisation. He said in a statement these statistics are a “tragic reminder” the flu is often mistaken for a common cold.

“I encourage everyone six months of age or over to get vaccinated against the flu. It could save your life” he said.

The good news is the 2023 flu season reflected that vaccinations were effective in protecting people from having to visit the GP or hospital.
