What is Neurographic Art? – Rewiring your brain through Art

Remember the days when ‘doodling’ in a school notebook covered more page space than the notes themselves and yet the learning process was engaged?

Neurographic Art is a doodler’s upgraded version, available to individuals or social groups, at no big expense. All you require is paper and colour pencils/felt tip pens.

TMCCA clients have participated in this activity and it’s one of the favourites on their list, during the Friday Friendship Group.  An enjoyable and creative process, this creative activity draws one into the ‘present moment, in the warm company of friends at TMCCA. It is also a great way to spend time alone as well, in the comfort of your own home.

Neurographic Art works with the subconscious mind through drawing curved shapes, connecting and intersecting the shapes with curved / squiggly lines, then softening sharp corners and colouring in. This creative method stimulates new neural pathways by combining art with psychology. Simply stated, connected neurons process information received enabling people to interact, experience emotions and sensations, create memories, and enable learning. This art technique is intended to transform one’s stress and fear into a beautiful work of creative expression, by drawing freeform lines, then later applying a specific algorithm.

For those who aren’t doodlers, this activity could be just another way to enjoy some artistic ‘me-time’ or a creative session with friends.

The algorithm is simple:

  1. Use a felt tip pen to draw circles, ovals any curved shapes on your paper.
  2. Draw looping or crisscrossing/scribble-like lines to cut across the circular shapes
  3. If you want to use the art therapy application – think of an issue you are facing while you draw the line. Don’t try to draw something intentionally… just doodle away. Let the pen and paper guide you.
  4. Fill in any sharp corners where lines intersect by ‘rounding off’.
  5. Add colour (blend colours or just shade in)… ENJOY !
