Every Christmas, Beaudesert is blanketed in so much festive cheer it has even been likened to a country version of the imaginary Dr Seuss town of ‘Whoville’.
This year the town is as merry as ever, with a particular focus on decorating Jubilee Park and William Street while major roadwork continues on Brisbane Street.
Happy local elves have been volunteering their time all year as part of the ‘Beaudesert’s Christmas Spirit’ initiative, crocheting at the Jubilee Park bandstand each week, then covering the town’s trees, poles and benches in yarnbombing.
On December 1, from 6.15pm, people will gather to see the town Christmas tree at Central Place get switched on as A Choired Taste and the U3A ukulele group perform carols in the ‘Light up Beaudesert’ tradition.
That date will also mark the start of the annual Santa hunt, in which children search for little crocheted Santas hidden in local shops. Santa hunt forms will be available at Light up Beaudesert and in some participating shops for those keen to take part in the fun.
On December 6, from 4.30pm, the Beaudesert Chamber of Commerce will host Carols in the Park and Christmas Markets at Jubilee Park. There will be market stalls and food vans from 4.30pm, locals will perform and lead carolling from 5.30pm and Santa will visit.
The BADCAP Christmas Makers’ Market is on November 30 to December 23 from 10am to 3pm at Stationmaster House, featuring unique handmade gifts from local artists.
Shopkeepers in Beaudesert CBD impacted by ongoing roadworks are also getting into the Christmas cheer, running shop local initiatives with great prizes up for grabs.
When the Bulletin met with local yarn bombers decorating Jubilee Park, they said it was rewarding to help spread Christmas cheer in Beaudesert.
“We love contributing to the community spirit and everyone is welcome to join,” said yarnbomber Debbie Portch.
Proactive locals formed the Beaudesert’s Christmas Spirit group in 2016 in response to calls for a town Christmas tree and the yarnbombing has been going since 2017.
