Wonder Women tame Tigers and Devils

Beaudesert Kingfishers Women’s Rugby League Team are Divisional Champions after winning against two undefeated teams in Grand Finals.

On 12 August they played Carina Tigers in the SEQ Community South Open Grand Final.

Down 0-6 after only three minutes, the Kingies scored 18 unanswered points to close out the win.

A consolation try in the last few minutes to the Tigers, saw a final score of 18-12 to the Kingies.

Player of the match, Olivia Thomas was relentless in defence, but it was her powerful attacking runs that had the Tigers on the back foot. Olivia sealed the win with a try ten minutes from full time that would cap off a brilliant game for the tireless front row forward.

Coach Keith Gee said the girls had executed the game plan perfectly.

“Both Rob Brown (Co-Coach) and myself have had a very intense last six weeks of training concentrating on our game plan and the results today have made us very proud,” he said.

“The girls showed exceptional teamwork to come away with a fantastic win and we’re so happy for them,” he added.

Backing up a week later, the Kingfisher women took on Banyo Devils in the North vs South  Community Grand Final.

Co-coach Rob Brown said the Kingfishers were underdogs in both games, playing against teams that had been undefeated all season.

At half time the Kingfishers were behind 10-6, but they came back to level the scores just after half time.

Banyo came back to score, leaving Kingfishers behind 14-10 with five minutes left to play.

In a nail-biting finish, Beaudesert scored and converted the goal to win the game 16-14.

“Our main focus was to win the competition we were playing in,” said Rob.

“They played well against Carina the week before but played exceptionally against Banyo.”

Gee said the victory was a culmination of a lot of hard work and support of all the players, coaching staff, supporters and sponsors.

“The support for our girls this year, especially today on grand final day has been outstanding. It was great to see so many supporters cheering us to victory,” he said.
