SEVENTEEN Canungra State School students were amongst 500 who competed at the Annual Athletics championships on the Gold Coast last month.
The annual event for students with disability was also attended by former Olympian Glynis Nunn-Cearns OAM, Minister for Sport Tim Mander MP and a range of sporting mascots.
The 2025 Annual Invitational Athletics Championships, coordinated by Gold Coast Recreation and Sport Inc attracted over 500 students with disabilities from 25 schools across the region.
The carnival featured approximately 400 events across track, wheelchair races, and sports skill challenges.
The day began with a traditional march past which Canungra State School won, a ceremonial flame lighting, and a mascot race which delighted the crowds.
Canungra State School P-2 Inclusion Teacher, Amy Highett, said the Canungra students had a fantastic day at the Athletics Carnival and represented the school with pride.
“This year’s theme was ‘Spirit of Australia’, which we showcased through an Aussie road trip featuring Australian icons,” Ms Highett said.
“We were fortunate to have support from Surf Life Saving Queensland, the Gold Coast Suns, Bunnings, Big W, and Spotlight in creating some fun costumes.”
Costumes for the march past included cardboard cars with Australian animals drawn on the windscreens; surf life savers; and bunnings workers, complete with hats and aprons.
Students from Prep to Year 6 attended the event and every child participated in both the 50 metre and 100 metre races, with many proudly taking home ribbons.
“There were too many ribbons to count, but the students also enjoyed the Sports Skill challenges, which included activities such as bocce, hula hooping, mini golf, and more.”
