The joy of singing just for the fun of it will unite people from across Beaudesert and beyond when the Scenic Rim Sings Community Choir Workshop returns on 8 October.

In a coup for Beaudesert, multi-award winner Jonathon Welch AM, who is renowned for leading internationally acclaimed ARIA, Logie and Helpmann award winning TV documentary ‘Choir of Hard Knocks’, will lead the workshop, hosted by A-Choired Taste.

Mr Welch has performed globally alongside the likes of Baz Luhrmann, John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes in a career spanning four decades and is recognised for building social inclusion in the arts, particularly for people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.

He created ‘Social Inclusion Week’, making Australia the only country in the world to celebrate Social Inclusion nationally, and launched the ‘School of Hard Knocks’ and ‘Play It Forward’ inclusive arts programs for all Australians.

When he comes to Beaudesert to lead the workshop, Mr Welch and A-Choired Taste will welcome anyone who loves singing, regardless of their experience, confidence or skill.

A-Choired Taste Conductor Corinne Teese said people do not need to know how to read music to join in, and don’t even need to be strong singers.

“It’s quite uplifting really when you have a big group of people in a room and if you don’t feel confident singing, there’s enough people there that you can hide within the group and still have a really joyful experience,” she said.

“The best choir members are those who aren’t soloists, because you have to able to blend and sing as a group – choirs do really well with a whole lot of average everyday voices.”

Bernie Grodecki encouraged people to come give it a go.

“A lot of people are anxious because they feel they can’t sing, but everybody can sing and it’s not a high-pressure workshop, and it’s suitable for beginners and for everyone – there’s no criteria,” she said.

At time of print more than 50 people had booked in for the all-day workshop, which only costs $10 per person and includes morning tea and lunch.

The event goes from 9.30am to 4pm Saturday, 8 October at Gallagher Hall St Mary’s, 1 Bromelton Street Beaudesert.

Registrations close 8pm 2 October for catering purposes.
