Locals take on stars

HAVING hosted the Trans-Tasman Test series a couple of years ago, Tamborine Mountain’s bowlers are somewhat used to rubbing shoulders with the highest echelon players in the sport.

Such was the case when a number of our local bowlers travelled down to the Australian Open Bowls Championships contested on the Gold Coast.

Jeff Lee and Bob Kirkright might have wished they had autograph books with them when they were drawn to play South African international bowler Eric Johannes and former champion cricketer, Kepler Wessels.

Wessels played 24 tests for Australia before going on to captain South Africa.

The highly credentialed international pairing did not have things entirely their own way, but did manage to win their sectional game against our Taipans, 21- 14.

It was a creditable performance by our bowlers against formidable opponents, but they weren’t our only bowlers representing Tamborine at the nationals.

Robyn Fullwood and Damon Bartholomeusz also enjoyed one of the biggest and best bowls tournaments in the world.

Damon was recently selected in the Gold Coast Para team for a test series against Singapore.

In no other sport could club bowlers have a chance of playing against world champions, perhaps enjoying a coldie or a cuppa with them afterwards.

Whether you want to compete at the highest level or simply enjoy the camaraderie and friendliness of lawn bowls, you can start your journey today by contacting our club and arranging a casual roll up – bowls and assistance is freely available.
