Learnings from an Ant

Many decades ago, ‘ant farms’ were a craze.

You could buy a bunch of ants and a pile of sand in a glass terrarium, much like a fish tank, and observe their activity.

From the outset, the little creatures would march back and forth, each carrying a grain of sand.

Initially their efforts seemed meaningless but over time clumps and tunnels began to form until an entire ant city was built.

The final result looked like a team of architects and construction crews with miniature equipment had fashioned the complex plan.

It’s tempting to look at other’s achievements and think that life has been kinder to them.

There are those who are really talented or fit or have a successful career or enjoy a long lasting relationship.

In fact, anyone who does something better than us can leave us feeling disadvantaged.

However, it’s often not the case that their life has been easier than ours.

Most people achieve in life because they adopt the same approach as the ant.

They put effort into moving one grain at a time.

Sometimes in life we face situations that are overwhelming.

You might be facing bereavement and huge adjustments.

Perhaps an unforeseen financial hit that feels unrecoverable.

Maybe you have a relationship that feels stuck or irreconcilable.

Take a lesson from the ant: tiny, consistent steps can eventually lead to something amazing.

Imagine the ant looked at the grain of sand and thought “what a waste of time!”.

Don’t judge your effort against your ultimate goal.

Judge yourself by whether or not you are doing the small things each day.

Value your little steps and let them be your focus.

What does your ant farm look like?

Start picking up a grain of sand today.
