TAMBORINE Mountain State High School student Harry Young has played a key role in helping the North Gold Coast Seahawks secure gold in the South Queensland Junior Basketball Competition Under 14 Boys League 3.
The Seahawks defeated the Northside Wizards Navy 72–61 in a competitive final, capping off a strong representative season for the team.
With the win, the side now moves up to Division 2 after a successful wildcard match against the South West Metro Pirates.
Harry, who also plays locally for Tamborine Mountain Basketball, said it was an “awesome” feeling to come away with the gold medal after a season of hard work and development.
“I applied what my coaches taught me in training, and my determination helped me push through the exhaustion and help my team score,” he said.
This is Harry’s second representative season under Coach Buddy, with Assistant Coach Dean Perri also guiding the squad.
He credited the coaching team not only for basketball skills but also for helping shape his on-court mindset and resilience.
“My biggest improvement has been understanding my role in the team,” he said.
“That includes what to do with and without the ball, and when to take a shot.”
Harry said the team had grown close throughout the season, forming bonds during training and off-court time with other players and families.
“We built strong connections on and off the court, so it makes it easier to win when you’re friends with your teammates,” he said.
The Seahawks will now prepare for the upcoming State Championships in Townsville from July 7 to 10, with the players staying together at a team resort to continue building team spirit.
“I’m very excited because we’ve moved up from Division 3 to Division 2, and I think we’ve got a good chance at some wins,” Harry said.
“We will all stay at the same resort as well, so after the games we get to hang out, relax, and have fun together.”
