COUNCILLOR COMMENTS – 24 July 2026

By now you should have received your latest rates and dog registration renewals notices. If not, please contact Council. Pease ensure your dog is registered and contained within your property.

The application OPW25/064 for a 7.9m pylon advertising sign at 165-183 Long Rd was approved at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on 22 July 2026 but with a condition limiting the sign to a height no more than 5.5m, in keeping with other existing signage on the Mountain. The setback from the front boundary is conditioned to be 3m rather than the requested 1m and the 39.5m combined double-faced signage is conditioned to be reduced to a total of 20m2. For those who would like to watch my 20 minute presentation of this item and reasons for not approving such an intrusive sign, start watching the meeting video at the 23 minute mark. Inflicting such a visual eyesore within spitting distance of Gallery Walk is disrespectful of the local community. This venue is not in a remote location nor is it on a road not traversed by tourists. I have proposed that Council commence immediate action to initiate a fast-tracked Planning Scheme amendment application to the State Govt to ensure the Mountain’s character and amenity are protected. Thankyou to the many submitters whose articulate and well-informed objections (ignored by the applicant) assisted in obtaining a unanimous vote to reduce the sign height to 5.5m.

New Development Applications – MCU26/064 – 130 Long Rd (Gallery Walk) – Code assessable – Community use (War Museum). Application documents now available on DAP Online.

Yet another boundary setback application CAR26/075 at 2 – 4 Mazama Court for significant front and side boundary setbacks for a carport and patio.

MCU26/076 – Minor Change to Approval MCU23/177 to expand the approved butterfly “sanctuary” (ie tourist attraction) within Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard & Winery at 104 – 144 Hartley Road. Plans show a doubling of the footprint and a significant increase in parking area.

Approved applications: MCU25/193 – Dwelling house at 123 Guanaba Road. This one is showing as “deemed approval” without a Decision Notice. I will follow up.

CAR 26/053 – another front boundary setback at 5 – 11 Colville Drive.

CAR26/054 – and another front boundary setback for a dwelling at 47 Pacific Parade.

Any character, charm and street appeal the Mountain has is rapidly being eroded by the sheer volume of carports and garages in front yards which do not meet the Planning Scheme setback requirements and dwellings which simply don’t fit on the property without a boundary relaxation. This is an issue I raise regularly with our Planners.
