PLANS for the future of the Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards have gone back to the drawing board, with the reopening of the saleyards off the table.
At Scenic Rim Regional Council’s meeting on April 30, Division Four Councillor Jennifer Sanders moved the feedback received through community consultation be noted; that Council provide a summary of the main findings for public dissemination; and that Council request the Chief Executive Officer (or delegate) to present an additional concept plan that incorporates minor infrastructure additions including adaptive reuse opportunities.
“I believe that Council has now done its utmost to engage with all the residents and stakeholders about the options for this site which had become an emotional and political issue,” Cr Sanders said.
“I hope that the community feels listened to and comfortable in the next steps in the process.”
The motion was passed unanimously.
Cr Amanda Hay declared a possible conflict of interest as she had signed a petition to save the saleyards in 2021. It was agreed that she could stay in the room and vote on the issue due to the amount of time that had passed.
Mayor Tom Sharp stated that he did not have a conflict of interest in this issue despite having actively campaigned against the closure of the saleyards prior to his election.
He said his objection at the time was that Council was not listening to the people.
