THE Canungra Times has been inundated today by phone calls, messages and visitors to the officer from residents concerned about a community consultation opened by a consortium of landowners to the north of the town.
The newly formed group of local landowners launched a community consultation process for a 742-hectare parcel of private land, situated approximately four kilometres north of Canungra.
Operating under the name Canungra360, the landowners have introduced a website – www.canungra360.com – to support ongoing dialogue with local residents, community stakeholders, and government agencies about the potential rezoning of the land.
The land is currently zoned Agricultural Land Classification (Class A and Class B) and it the consortium would have to apply to the State Government to have the land rezoned for the type of development proposed.
This could include residential development, schools and shops.
Many residents have expressed their concern about the current traffic, parking and water problems in the town which have gotten worse over the past five years as more developments are completed and increased through traffic comes through the town to the Gold Coast.
Others were concerned about the Mundoolun Connection Road and Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road intersection where several fatalities have occurred in the last five years.
Greg Benneworth, spokesperson for Canungra360, said community involvement will be central to the consultation process.
“Through Canungra360, we’re inviting the community to take part in the conversation—to better understand the intent behind the proposal, ask questions, and help shape the direction of the vision,” he said.
“Our goal is to ensure this process reflects not only the perspectives of landowners but also the aspirations and values of the broader Canungra community.”
