News from St Luke’s

St Luke's

A busy month is coming at St Luke’s as the Easter season commences with Ash Wednesday on March 5.

There will be a service at 10am to commence the Lenten period.

This is a very important part of the Christian calendar and is a season of self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study and preparation for Easter.

Lent is observed by many different church denominations and reminds us of the forty days Jesus fasted in the wilderness.

If you would like to attend the 10am service at St Luke’s on Ash Wednesday you will receive the symbol of the cross on your forehead as a sign of penitence and of your trust in God.

During Lent, many people set aside time to study the Bible, or meet with other people to reflect on Jesus’ life and prepare for events of Holy Week and Easter.

On Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Tuesday as it is often called, St Luke’s served pancakes to our local school children.

Traditionally pancakes were made and served the day before Lent and this was a way to use up rich foods such as eggs and fat which would not be consumed during Lent. Today the tradition continues, and while many do not know the meaning of Pancake Tuesday, they certainly enjoy eating them.

A small group meets each Wednesday Morning at 11am in the pavilion at the church for a cuppa and conversation.

During Lent the group will follow a Lenten Study about hope.

Everyone is welcome to join in. I am sure hope is something we all have in our thoughts and hearts.

Hope 25 is an initiative of the Australian Anglican Church and it will commence in April as a season reflecting our hope in Jesus.

St Luke’s is not just a place of worship on Sundays, but a very active community centre where everyone is welcome to join in.

Our hope is for people to feel included as a part of the Canungra community.
