Canungra Cleans Up

A small band of volunteers gathered early in the morning at Monarch Drive for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1st March.
Cr Virginia West organised the day, with volunteers concentrating on Monarch Drive, Manor Court, Coburg Road, Lions Park and Moriarty Park.
“We concentrated on a small area so that it wasn’t too difficult with a small group of people,” said Virginia.
Virginia said that the area was surprisingly clean, particularly the skate park and play areas which have been harder areas to clean in the past.
“It’s good to see that people really are looking after these areas in town,” she said.

Community Connection
While preparing for the first edition of the Canungra Times, Editor Stu Comley got in touch with community organisations, businesses and the local Councillor at the time, Virginia West, to contribute towards the paper.
As Division Two Councillor, Virginia submitted a column every month for 20 years.
Her first column included congratulations to Stu on starting the Canungra Times, news of the footpath from St Luke’s Church to Coburg Road and a call for residents to utilise library services to keep the numbers (and funding) up for the Canungra Library.
It also mentioned fundraising by the Canungra Hotel for an 18 year old man at Tamborine.
The Hotel had raised $500 in three days towards a laptop for the young man – a great effort back in 2005 when $500 went a lot further than it does now!
