LOOKING out for each other and knowing each other’s stories is what keeps us connected as a community.

A loyal reader recently told us there’s always someone you know in the Bulletin and said reading our paper was like walking down the street when she first moved here, seeing familiar faces.

She also pointed out that now there are so many more people here, a visit to the supermarket doesn’t always result in a quick chat with someone like it used to.

In this edition, you’ll read about the well-deserved awards presented to some of Beaudesert’s quiet achievers contributing to our community through music, sport, academia, service groups, advocacy, the environment and youth development.

It’s inspiring to read about award recipients Typhoon Le Garde, George Massam and Marijke Freeman putting their best foot forward and making a difference.

It’s uplifting how the Three Musketeers on page 5 keep loyally showing up at their local newsagency each morning and won’t let the massive roadworks get between them and their newspapers.

There is a special place in everyone’s heart for the firefighters of our region, and this edition you’ll read about how several local firies have won awards for their outstanding commitment and compassion for the communities they serve.

Or how about local cancer survivor Rhonda Thorpe, who continues to organise fundraisers to not only support those who helped her but also raise awareness in the community?

There are countless others who quietly contribute to the social fabric of our community and if you are reading this, the chances are you might be one of them.

I’m saying that not because I think reading our newspaper is an award-winning act of community service (although we do thank you for your readership) but because keeping yourself connected makes a difference.

In this age of information overload, I think there is something to be said for diligently taking an interest in what’s happening in your community and being intentional about the information you consume.

What better way to do that than sitting down with a good old fashioned hard copy of your local newspaper where you can keep up with important issues affecting you, see familiar faces and find plenty of local goods and services?

And who knows, next time you walk down the street or head to the shops you might be lucky enough to bump into a mate for a chat and it might just make your day, and theirs.
