Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May was a timely opportunity for Scenic Rim Regional Council to join a network committed to taking positive action to build a safer community.
Council recently formalised its membership of the Local Government Domestic and Family Violence Champions Network, with myself as Scenic Rim’s Community, Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor and my Division 4 Councillor colleague Jennifer Sanders as members.
Domestic and family violence is a major concern across all levels of society and it’s a sad fact that in our community, as elsewhere across Queensland, so much police time is spent combating this distressing issue.
My thanks to everyone who turned out to last week’s Candlelight Vigil at Jubilee Park to observe National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day honouring those whose lives have been lost through domestic and family violence.
Led by YFS Ltd, supported by the Zonta Club of Beaudesert Area Inc, Scenic Rim Regional Council, Beaucare and the Traditional Mununjali Aboriginal Elders Group, this was an important opportunity for our community to come together and recognise the need to take a stand against violence and work towards meaningful change.
Along with residents and business operators in Beaudesert, I was thrilled to see the northbound traffic lane of Brisbane Street in Beaudesert open in time for Easter!
The Brisbane Street roadworks were a challenging time for residents and local businesses and I thank everyone for their continued support of local traders as Council has worked to revitalise the heart of Beaudesert.
Another much-anticipated project has been the off-leash Beaudesert Dog Park, in Lions Bicentennial Park, which was finally completed after months of delays caused by wet weather. Identified from last year’s Council budget community consultation I know this dog park will be greatly enjoyed by the local community and their four-legged friends and fur babies.
The results of the recent community consultations will help to fine-tune the Draft Budget 2025-2026 and Draft Corporate Plan 2025-2030 in preparation for discussion and final adoption. I thank everyone who provided their feedback, either in person at the community events, or online via the Let’s Talk Scenic Rim online platform.
Following on from attendance of the incredibly inspiring TM Arts Trail weekend, I am greatly looking forward to further wonderful creative activity with tomorrow’s official launch of the ‘Furari Flores’ multi-sensory Art Exhibition at The Centre Beaudesert.
Running until July 19, this is a spectacular show of works by Cara-Ann Simpson including scent sculptures, tactile fabric pieces, and soundscapes drawn from natural environments.
I hope you will take time to enjoy this free exhibition which is just one facet of Council’s amazing Creative Scenic Rim program for the year!
